Attio vs HubSpot: why teams switch
HubSpot is a solid platform when you need marketing and sales under one roof. But many teams end up paying for a bloated tool when all they need is a fast, flexible CRM. That's where Attio fits.
We help teams migrate from HubSpot to Attio and set up a workspace that actually matches how they work.
Short answer
Most teams using HubSpot only use the CRM and ignore 80% of the marketing suite. Attio gives you the same CRM job at a fraction of the seat cost, with custom objects on Pro at $79 rather than HubSpot Enterprise at around $150 plus onboarding, and AI on every record. Keep HubSpot only if you actively use Marketing Hub.
The HubSpot problem
HubSpot starts free. That's the hook. But once your team grows, so does the bill: per-seat pricing, feature gating, and add-on costs for things that feel like they should be included.
Meanwhile, the CRM itself is buried inside a marketing platform. You get a lot of features, but many of them have nothing to do with how your team actually manages relationships and deals.
Teams usually start looking for alternatives when:
- The cost per seat makes adding team members painful
- They're paying for marketing features they don't use
- The CRM is slow and cluttered with unused functionality
- Custom objects and workflows feel locked behind expensive tiers
- They want a CRM, not a marketing suite with a CRM bolted on
Why Attio is a better fit for many teams
Attio is not a HubSpot replacement for everyone. If you rely on HubSpot's marketing automation, email sequences, and landing pages, you probably need HubSpot or something similar.
But if what you actually use is the CRM (contacts, companies, deals, pipelines, reports), Attio does that better, faster, and cheaper.
Where Attio wins
Pricing that doesn't punish growth
HubSpot gets expensive fast once you leave the free tier. Attio is free for up to 3 users, and paid plans don't have the same per-seat sticker shock. You don't need to calculate whether adding a team member is 'worth it.'
A CRM that's actually fast
HubSpot's UI can feel sluggish, especially with lots of records and custom properties. Attio is noticeably faster: navigation, search, list views, editing records. When your team uses the CRM all day, speed matters.
Flexible data model
HubSpot lets you customize within its fixed structure. Attio lets you create custom objects and relationships from scratch. If your business doesn't fit neatly into Contacts/Companies/Deals, Attio gives you room to model what you actually have.
AI that's built in, not bolted on
Attio's AI (Ask Attio) works across your entire CRM: search records, summarize calls, draft notes, update fields using natural language. It's part of the daily workflow, not a separate add-on.
No feature bloat
HubSpot has hundreds of features. Most teams use a fraction of them. Attio is lean: you build what you need and nothing more. Less noise, less training, faster adoption.
At a glance
| Dimension | HubSpot | Attio |
|---|---|---|
| Core model | All-in-one marketing + sales platform | Flexible, data-first CRM |
| Best fit | Teams that want marketing and sales in one tool | Teams that want a CRM they can shape to their process |
| Pricing | Free tier, then steep jumps. Per-seat costs add up fast | Free for up to 3 users. Predictable pricing as you grow |
| Flexibility | Customizable within a fixed structure | Custom objects and relationships from the ground up |
| AI | AI tools across marketing and sales features | AI as a native layer: search, summarize, create across all records |
| Complexity | Powerful but heavy. Lots of features you may not need | Lean and fast. You build only what you use |
| Speed | Can feel slow, especially on larger accounts | Fast UI, quick to navigate and customize |
Which one fits?
Attio is better if
- You mainly need a CRM, not a marketing platform
- Per-seat pricing is becoming a problem
- You want a fast, clean interface your team will actually use
- You need custom objects beyond contacts, companies, and deals
- You want AI as part of daily CRM work
- You're a startup or small team that doesn't need enterprise bloat
HubSpot may be better if
- You rely on HubSpot's marketing automation and email tools
- You need landing pages, forms, and lead scoring in one platform
- Your team is already deep in the HubSpot ecosystem
- You need enterprise-grade compliance and permissions
HubSpot vs Attio in detail
Most teams using HubSpot do not use HubSpot. They use the CRM inside it and ignore most of the platform. Whether that is you is the whole decision.
What the two free plans actually include
This is the part most comparison pages skip, because "free" means something different on each tool.
- If you have ten people on a sales team, HubSpot Free fits them. If you have three and want a CRM you can actually shape around the business, Attio Free fits them. The two products optimise for different free users.
| HubSpot Free CRM | Attio Free | |
|---|---|---|
| Seats | Unlimited | Up to 3, and up to 3 objects |
| Custom objects | No | No — Attio gates them to Pro too |
| Custom properties / attributes | Small allowance | Unlimited attributes |
| Pipelines | 1 deal pipeline | Deals object with statuses |
| Workflow automation | No | 1 workflow |
| Custom reporting | No | 5 list views |
| Email and calendar sync | Yes | Yes |
| Vendor branding on outputs | Yes, on emails and forms | No |
The costs that are not on the pricing page
The sticker price is the floor, not the ceiling. These are the line items that surprise HubSpot teams at renewal.
- Contact tier creep. Marketing contacts are billed in tiers, and teams cross one mid-year — the next invoice carries an increase nobody budgeted for.
- Custom report limits. The Professional tier caps how many custom reports you can save; unlocking it is often what flips Professional into Enterprise.
- Dedicated IP and email sending, required once you send at scale and not in the base seat price.
- Sandbox environments, which live on Enterprise. Teams without one ship changes straight to production and pay for it in cleanup.
- API call limits. Higher daily ceilings are an Enterprise feature, and integrations that were fine at pilot start throttling as volume creeps up.
- Workflow action quotas. Each Professional workflow run counts against a monthly allowance, and two busy cleanup workflows can be enough to start eating into the next tier.
- The structural one: custom objects sit behind HubSpot Enterprise, which also carries a seat minimum and an onboarding fee. Attio gates them too, to Pro at $79 a seat billed annually — roughly half the HubSpot Enterprise seat price, with no onboarding fee attached and no minimum.
Feature by feature
Two patterns stand out. HubSpot wins on marketing depth, email sequences and lead scoring — if you need those inside the same tool as the CRM, that is a real reason to stay. Attio wins on flexibility, speed and total cost, if you treat the CRM as a CRM and run sending separately.
| HubSpot Sales Hub | Attio | |
|---|---|---|
| Free seats | Unlimited, limited features | 3 seats, 3 objects, unlimited attributes |
| Custom objects | Enterprise only, plus a seat minimum | Pro, at $79 a seat with no onboarding fee |
| Custom attributes | Limited count by tier | Unlimited |
| Pipelines | 1 free, more on paid | Unlimited |
| Workflow automations | Professional and up | All paid plans |
| Reporting | Strong, deep, mature | Solid for most teams, less depth at the edges |
| Email sequences | Built in on Professional | Via Apollo, Smartlead, Outreach or similar |
| Lead scoring | Built in on Professional | Custom workflow or external tool |
| Marketing emails and landing pages | Marketing Hub | Out of scope — pair with a sending tool |
| Native AI | Breeze across the hubs | Ask Attio, Research and Classify attributes |
| Onboarding fee | Yes, on Professional and Enterprise | None |
| Time to a working CRM | Weeks for a mid-tier setup | Days |
When you should keep HubSpot
This does not get said often enough on pages like this one. Stay on HubSpot if any of the following is true.
- You actively run inbound marketing: landing pages, lead scoring, sequences, a blog hosted on HubSpot, forms feeding the funnel. Moving the CRM and leaving marketing behind is more painful than staying.
- Marketing and sales report into the same tool, and the MQL-to-SQL handoff lives entirely inside HubSpot today.
- You need MEDDIC, BANT or another structured selling methodology baked in. Attio can model them, but you are configuring it yourself.
- Compliance and audit trail are real constraints, and you need the deeper permission scaffolding HubSpot Enterprise ships with.
- You are over 100 seats with a HubSpot admin team. At that scale the ecosystem, training material and existing automations have compounding value, and the switch maths is harder.
FAQ
Is Attio a HubSpot replacement?
For the CRM part, yes. For marketing automation, landing pages, and email sequences, no. If you only use HubSpot as a CRM, Attio is a lighter, faster, cheaper alternative.
Can I migrate from HubSpot to Attio?
Yes. Contacts, companies, deals, notes, and custom properties can be migrated. The real value is in restructuring the data model during the move.
Is Attio really free?
Yes, for up to 3 seats, with the three standard objects, unlimited attributes on them, email and calendar sync and Ask Attio. Paid plans add seats, records, and — on Pro — custom objects, formula attributes and Call Intelligence.
Will my team actually switch?
Attio is faster and simpler than HubSpot. Teams that felt overwhelmed by HubSpot usually adopt Attio more quickly. The key is setting it up properly from the start.
What about HubSpot integrations I use?
Depends on the integration. Many common tools (Slack, email, calendar) work with Attio natively. For others, Make, Zapier, or n8n can bridge the gap.
How long does a HubSpot to Attio migration take?
Typically 1-2 weeks for a clean migration with restructured data. If you just need a basic import, it can be faster.
Which Attio plan do I need for custom objects?
Pro, at $79 per seat per month billed annually. Free and Plus give you the three standard objects with unlimited attributes on them; custom objects, formula attributes and Call Intelligence are all Pro. The comparison that matters is that HubSpot puts the same capability on Enterprise at around $150 a seat, with a seat minimum and an onboarding fee on top — so the same job costs roughly half as much.
What does HubSpot do that Attio does not?
Marketing. Landing pages, forms, CTAs, hosted blogs, lead scoring models and native email sequences are all first-class in HubSpot and out of scope for Attio. HubSpot's reporting also goes deeper at the edges, and its Enterprise permission and audit scaffolding is more mature.
We only use HubSpot's CRM. Is that common?
It is the single most common reason teams move. Most HubSpot accounts we audit use the CRM and ignore the large majority of the platform, which means paying a marketing-suite price for a CRM job. If that describes you, the comparison is straightforward.
